Programs built around learning and belonging

Kubana’s after-school program supports immigrant and refugee scholars in grades 3–12 with homework help, subject tutoring, mentoring, and enrichment. The program connects academic learning with cultural identity, confidence, and belonging.

What scholars experience

• Homework help in math, reading, writing, science, and social studies.

• Study skills, time management, and learning-to-learn strategies.

• Digital literacy for school portals, email, typing, and research tools.

• Mentoring, social-emotional learning, and cultural enrichment.

2025 pilot

From September through December 2025, ten students participated regularly in two weekly sessions. Six consistent volunteers helped Kubana complete 24 instructional sessions.

How the program began

Founder Prosper Ruberwa’s experience supporting his son through school in the United States shaped Kubana’s after-school program. After arriving from Africa, his son struggled in an unfamiliar school system. Prosper worked with teachers and school leaders to build a plan with regular communication, progress meetings, and daily support at home. His son went on to graduate from high school on time.

That experience showed Prosper how much a family’s connection with a school can change a student’s path. It also revealed the barriers immigrant and refugee families face when learning a new language and navigating an unfamiliar education system.

Kubana’s after-school program grew from that experience. Alongside academic, social, and emotional support for students, it helps parents build the tools and confidence to advocate for their children and work with their schools.
